There's No Place Like Home…
Research has shown that stable housing is essential to helping persons with serious disabilities recover and become productive members of the community. Since mental illnesses strike persons who are young, usually between 18 to 25 years old, their education and career development is often affected. The result is that many persons cannot afford decent and safe housing because they are unemployed. Without temporary assistance with housing, too often persons with mental illnesses become homeless or hospitalized.
State laws require local MH/DAS Boards work to increase community resources for persons with serious mental illnesses and alcohol/drug diagnosis to avert such problems.
Sustainable Housing Solutions…
We provide an array of services that ultimately result in having sustainable housing. Temporary rental and utility subsidy programs for persons with mental illnesses assist until they become eligible for more long-term programs such as our permanent housing program or housing vouchers through the local metropolitan housing authorities. Our housing programs have received many praises from area Landlords and commendations from consumers themselves because of the success experienced in helping persons live in community housing.
The ultimate goal of the programs is to help persons become more self-sufficient and employed. Persons with mental illnesses and alcohol/drug diagnosis want to work, but often have difficulty finding employment due to the stigma attached to their illness. To help persons gain employment, we refer individuals to existing vocational programs, including employment services offered through various local agencies.
